Healing updates - 2-3 weeks post-op

I'm 3 weeks post-op today! Everything has continued to heal well in the past week. True to Dr. Nicole's word, I've noticed significant improvement in the healing of the sutures, though there was some random bleeding a few days ago. As you can see in the below photos, some of the white stitches are visible at the more internal spot that's been finicky about healing. I've been feeling pretty good, getting lots of rest and trying not to overdo it. Sitting is still uncomfortable, but I can tolerate it for longer. I've continued to apply neosporin once a day, right after taking a shower.

  1. Thank you for posting this. I have been considering surgery with Dr Bowers and your results are really great. You're a brave man to put your new junk on line for your community.

  2. Thank you! I prefer to remain anonymous on this blog for professional reasons, but I am happy to email one-on-one if you have any questions that aren't answered through my blog. Let me know if there's anything you'd like to know or any questions I can address, and I'll shoot you a private message. (Also, I just posted a one-month update.)

  3. Thanks for this info! I am also considering a simple meta with Bowers, along with testicular implants and hysto (if I can get it covered by insurance). Do you mind if I ask whether implants were an option with this surgery?

  4. Hey there,
Yes, implants were an option with this surgery. I opted not to get implants for reasons outlined in my intro post about 6 weeks ago (primarily, I plan to be pregnant in the future, and don't want any extra bits potentially interfering with my ability to conceive/carry/deliver). Dr. Bowers does do testicular implants though, and a friend I made while in San Mateo had implants put in at the same time as his simple meta. I guess they are pretty expensive (if not covered by insurance) - about $3000 for the pair!

  5. Thanks for this information! Forgive me if I'm asking you to repeat things, but did you have this covered by insurance? If not, would you mind sharing the total cost?

  6. Yes, my employer-provided insurance covered this 100%. However, the cost estimate I got from Dr. Bowers if I did have to pay out-of-pocket was $4700 total (surgery center, anesthesia, and Dr.'s fees). Hope that's helpful!

  7. Thank you--that does help! I've always assumed that lower surgery would be out of my price range, but I think I could afford this surgery (with testicular implants) if I could get hysto covered by insurance. Thanks again for sharing!

  8. No problem! You will certainly get a lot of bang for your buck, so to speak.

  9. Thank you for all of this. I know that you're a couple of years out, but it's helping me now. I just had a ring meta with Dr. Bowers (whom I adore and I believe has upped her level of communication). It's been two weeks now, and as I lay awake at 4am, worrying about a bleeding incision, I was greatly comforted by your account. So, again, thank you.
